Wayne is the partner heading the Johannesburg office of Control Risks and joined the company in 2014. He has more than 25 years’ of risk advisory and investigative experience having worked for the South African government as well as private companies. Wayne’s areas of specialization are multilateral diplomacy, criminal investigations, financial investigations, and anti-bribery and corruption reviews.

He has conducted major (US) Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigations on behalf of multinational US and European clients as well as compliance and integrity reviews in various countries in Africa including Angola; Kenya; Nigeria; South Africa; Mozambique; Botswana; Namibia; Zimbabwe.

Wayne was previously a Chief Investigating Officer at the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO), a specialized law enforcement agency in South Africa that was mandated to investigate serious economic offences and transnational organized crime. He also served as the head of investigations for the Asset Forfeiture Unit where he was responsible for overseeing financial investigations and asset tracing. After leaving the DSO he joined the foreign service of South Africa and served as a senior diplomat in the United Nations Security Council and dealt with sanctions measures.

Calvin Christopher is the Chief Compliance Officer for Standard Chartered Bank, South Africa and Southern Africa. In addition to serving as the Chief Compliance Officer for the Johannesburg Branch, Calvin is accountable for oversight of the Conduct, Financial Crime and Compliance Function across Botswana, Mauritius, South Africa and Zambia.

Calvin is a Legal and Compliance practitioner who is passionate about banking and the impact that financial institutions can have on their customers and communities.

Calvin joined the Bank in May 2015, initially as Head of Legal & Compliance, Commercial Clients, Africa, and most recently held the role of Executive Director, Compliance, Strategy & Alignment, Africa & Middle East. Prior to joining Standard Chartered, Calvin spent 5 years with Barclays Africa in roles including Financial Markets Legal; Investment Banking Compliance; and Head of Legal for Barclays Bank Tanzania.

Calvin began his career in private practice with law firms in New York, London, and Johannesburg, covering capital markets and corporate finance. Calvin holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Princeton University and a Juris Doctorate (JD) from New York University. Calvin is an admitted attorney to the bar in New York.

Based in Control Risks’ Johannesburg office, Seamus provides political, operational and security risk analysis on Southern Africa. Seamus speaks regularly to the media on developments in the region, travels widely and maintains a strong personal network of sources.

Seamus also has responsibility for client liaison in the region, designing and delivering bespoke consulting engagements for companies looking to expand within or into Southern Africa. Seamus has particular experience advising clients in energy, but he works on a broad range of sectors, and on topics including integrity and compliance issues, operational and reputational issues, and factors influencing policymaking.

Prior to joining Control Risks, Seamus completed a doctorate in International Relations at the University of Oxford. His research focused on how pan-Africanism shaped responses to conflict resolution and continental integration, with a particular emphasis on the roles of, and relationship between, South Africa and Nigeria. Seamus holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Oxford, as well as a further postgraduate degree in International Relations and an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Cape Town.

Based in Control Risks’ London office, Patricia provides political, operational and security risk analysis across the entire Eastern Africa region. She is a regular contributor to Control Risks’ subscription services, and undertakes bespoke consultancy engagements for clients operating in the region.

Patricia works across a broad range of sectors, from finance, mining, oil and gas and energy, to agriculture and international development, advising clients on policy, regulatory, compliance and integrity issues. She has particular experience advising clients looking to operate successfully in complex security environments across the region, including northern Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Somalia.

Before joining Control Risks, Patricia worked for the Aga Khan Foundation in Nairobi, carrying out policy research, business development and communications support for development projects in agriculture, health, education and governance across East Africa. She previously worked as an income analyst for Citigroup Global Markets in London, covering markets across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Patricia holds an MPhil in International Relations and Politics from the University of Cambridge, where her research focused on the political economy of regional integration in East Africa. She holds a first-class Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Leeds. She speaks fluent Swahili, and basic French.
